Thomas Billhardt. Photography

With an essay by Steffen Lüddemann

Thomas Billhardt’s pictures were a glimpse into the world for the GDR citizens – many of them are still in their memory today. With images of the Vietnam war, he became known worldwide at the end of the 1960s. His paintings documented the horrors of this war for the first time, especially in the faces of the children he photographed, and have since been a dominant theme of many of his portraits. With his photographs of the world, he holds the mirror relentlessly, showing at the same time that there is still hope.

As a reportage photographer, he traveled on behalf of GDR government agencies, agencies, publishers and UNICEF and documented the focal points of world events, In Vietnam, Chile, Cuba and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

For the present volume, he has opened his archive for a comprehensive workshow for the first time. Apart from the well-known, also unpublished, spectacular picture material was selected.
